I've been working on my May sewing challenges. The paper piecing project is well underway. All of the rectangles have been 'papered' and sewn into strips. The next step is to sew the strips together and then to add a border. The final piece will eventually become a cushion cover.

I was going to give the crazy quilting a miss, but at the last minute I decided to take Queeniepatch's advice and try a small project, so I'm making a pincushion. I've used old jeans and sewn the patches together. Now I just need to decide on the embellishment.

That's right - finshed; completed; done! It's been a long old slog and at times I wondered if it would ever get done, but now it's lying on my eldest's bed after being a WIP for almost four years.

Aug 2012

The blanket started life in August 2012 amid the fervour of the Queen's Jubilee and the London Olympics (hence the patriotic colour scheme).

After playing around with the layout I decided on a design inspired by a patchwork quilt.

The granny square centres crocheted up pretty quickly but as I added the outer rounds the project stalled again and again. You see, I'm impatient. My eye is constantly darting from one thing to the next; so many pretty patterns, so many different yarns, so many colours and so little time to fit it all in. I didn't want to spend ALL of my time on this one project because then it would be months before I could try anything new. MONTHS! So it got shelved, abandoned, forgotton - repeatedly. Every now and again I'd remember my poor, unfinished crochet blanket and work on it diligently for a week or two before losing interest all over again.
But then there were fewer and fewer gaps, and the end was tantalisingly within sight. Then one day the last of the blue squares was completed and there was a blanket! Almost. I could have finished there but it didn't look quite right; it needed a proper edge so I pushed through the inertia and gave it a simple two rounds of treble crochet. Nothing fancy, just get it done. And then finally, the weaving in. After the nightmare of ends that I was faced with after the crochet baby blanket, this was almost a pleasure. Little by little, block by block, the ends disappeared from the back of the blanket until on the evening of 20th May 2016 I was able to say "Ta-dah!!!".
Needless to say there was a HUGE sigh of satisfaction and much happy dancing. My eldest scooped it up with delight and wrapped himself up in it like a caterpillar in a cocoon. That was probably the best moment. It is now draped over his top bunk and he loves to lie on it and under it.Mrs. B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13913898039403718543noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812400871388338528.post-49195988849220774102016-05-07T21:28:00.000+01:002016-06-08T21:45:06.760+01:00May Sewing Challenge - Try Something New

My sewing prompt for May is "Try Something New". I have a couple of things in mind for this. The first is English Paper Piecing. I've seen many examples of it; some of it I like, some not so much, but it does seem to have many possibilities to be creative. One of the main reasons that I've avoided it is because of how fiddly it looks, but I thought a small cushion cover would be a manageable project.

The second is crazy quilting. Again this is something I've seen around a lot but I'm not quite sure that I like. However it does look like with the various layouts and fabric, colour, stitch and embellishment choices the ability to put your own stamp on things is pretty much infinite. I did find this example on Pinterest which I think is very pretty.

Both of these projects are fairly outside of my comfort zone so would be worth trying to help develop both my stitching and design skills. I'm not sure if I'll get the chance to try them both, but I'll give it a good try.

Although I didn't post about it, my challenge to myself for April was to do some hand embroidery. I've seen so many beautiful examples on Instagram and Pinterest, which inspired me to get some of my own embroidery done so I went back to TAST, which had fallen by the wayside. I haven't achieved as much as I would have liked but at least I did something...

I've never tried couching before. After struggling for a while to figure out how to use it, I settled on using it to create some script. I used some salmon pink mercerised cotton yarn (by Patons I think), couched down with gold thread. To avoid having to stop and start I decided to mimic the way I would write the word, which involved doubling up the yarn in places. The 'd' and the 'a' look a bit weird where I've doubled up the yarn side-by-side, but for the 'm' I went on top of the existing yarn and it's a much neater look.

TAST 10 - Running Stitch

For my first running stitch sampler I was inspired by Japanese Sashiko embroidery, which uses running stitch to create geometric patterns. The resulting shapes traditionally have a symbolic meaning. It is simplicity itself, but produces some really beautiful results. My attempt is a far cry from the defined, precise stitching of traditional Sashiko, but in my defense I drew my pattern freehand so didn't have the benefit of super-straight lines. That's my excuse anyway.

I thought it would be fun to try a freestyle, doodle type of thing as well. On its own in a small hoop it looks like it could use some additional embellishment, but it might work better on a larger surface, like a cushion cover for example.

It was good to dig out the embroidery hoop and do some stitching. I was partially successful in that I finished the play tent, but unfortunately the tablet cover, although no longer at the bottom of a rather large bag of stuff, still remains unfinished.
I'm pretty pleased with the play tent. I didn't use a pattern so it's great that it actually stands up! I guess my trigonometry wasn't quite up to scratch as the sides are a teensy bit saggy, so I'm going to add some ties to the top to go around the poles, just to help the tent keep its shape.

I would have finished sooner, but at the last minute I decided to add some colour by using some fabric crayons to colour in the feather-style pattern, which turned out to be a rather laborious process! The boys love it, so it was all worthwhile 😌.Mrs. B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13913898039403718543noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812400871388338528.post-50410642822743425362016-02-10T20:13:00.000+00:002016-02-10T20:13:08.030+00:00WIP WednesdayThe RWB blanket is tantalisingly close to completion!
Since taking the picture there are only 2 squares left to fill in. Then it's a case of edging (or not, haven't decided yet) and darning in ends. So close!Mrs. B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13913898039403718543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812400871388338528.post-66357139399366347832016-02-09T13:37:00.000+00:002016-02-09T13:37:10.184+00:00February Sewing Challenge - Turn UFOs into PFOsI'm not a great finisher. My house is littered with half-finished projects. I tend to jump into a new project with gusto, but then it all just kind of fizzles out. So my challenge for February is to turn some UFOs (unfinished objects) into PFOs (proudly finished objects)!

The main item on my list is a play tent that I started for my boys about a year to 18 months ago. They're always trying to build dens so I thought that it would be great to make them a tee-pee style play tent; something a little like this:

It's not far off, but I didn't use a pattern and I had to patch together some of the fabric to make it fit, so I'm not sure how well it's all going to fit together! Fingers crossed for a good result.

Another item that's been hidden away for about three years now (!) is a sleeve that I started making for my tablet. It was my first foray into quilting and I started it in a sewing class, but then I stopped going and the binding had me a bit confused so it slowly made its way to the bottom of my scrap bag. I still don't have anything to carry my tablet in so it would be great to finish it, plus I really love the fabric.

I think I'll leave it there. No point in trying to do too much. Hopefully I'll be back at the start of next month with some beautiful photos of my PFOs. I made a cushion before the end of the month and here it is:

The design is inspired by a motif I saw in a colouring book. I chose the fabrics based on colours I tried both on paper and on the laptop.

I'm not sure that I like it that much. It's OK but the idea seemed better than the outcome. I would have liked to make a slightly different version of this design, but that would have entailed some precision cutting and a lot more sewing. Maybe something I'll revisit. The important thing is that I made something and dusted off those cobwebs. It would probably have helped if I hadn't left it until almost the last minute! On to the next challenge!

Mrs. B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13913898039403718543noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812400871388338528.post-16281289904489983652016-01-27T12:39:00.002+00:002016-01-27T12:39:48.131+00:00January Sewing Challenge - CushionSo here's the thing: I've become addicted to accumulating the stuff involved in crafting (the materials: paper, fabric, yarn etc., and the tools) rather than the crafting itself! As a result, when I find that I have a little time to engage in some lovely crafty activity, I get overwhelmed by the sheer choice that faces me and end up suffering from creative constipation. Sorry to be a bit crude, but you know that feeling when you really want to create something, but you're so surrounded by options that you just don't know where to start and you end up doing nothing? Well, that's been me for the past couple of years.

I've developed a real interest in papercrafting, but I still love to crochet and I'd love to get back into embroidery and sewing. One thing that I find helps me to get past the mental block is to join in with blog challenges. I don't always keep up, but it's a great way to get past the uncertainty of "What should I make?" So with that in mind I've decided to set myself a monthly sewing challenge with a different cue word each month.

The word for January is "cushion". This seems very apt for me as I have about 7 cushion pads hanging around the house just waiting to be encased in fabric loveliness. In true style I'm well behind schedule, but there are 4 and a bit days left in January and I'm nothing if not optimistic! I had grand visions of patchwork perfection, but perhaps that will have to wait for another time. I just hope that the sheer volume of fabric that I have to choose from doesn't leave me bunged up (creatively speaking of course!).Mrs. B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13913898039403718543noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812400871388338528.post-54803545760765447742015-12-01T17:43:00.000+00:002015-12-01T17:43:52.186+00:00TAST 7 & 8 - Chain Stitch and Detached Chain StitchWe usually put our Christmas decorations up on 1st December, which is today! I found some felt circles that I had cut and forgotten about and decided to make some felt baubles. And what better way to decorate them than with TAST stitches. I made her a Christmas tree, which was cut from green felt with sequins sewn onto the entire front surface, and was finished off with small gems for baubles and metallic yarn for tinsel. I did take a photo of it, but my skills were not enough to really capture the brooch and the whole thing looked flat, whereas in reality it was so dynamic with all the reflections from the sequins and gems. Anyway, I also made a Christmas pudding brooch as a back-up, which photographed a little better.

To make it I cut a two rounds of brown felt about 2.5 inches in diameter, and then I cut a piece of white felt to mimic the frosting and sewed that to one of the brown circles. Then I sewed the sequins onto the white felt, being sure to cover the whole area. The sequins I used were very pale purple with what I think is called an Aurora Borealis (AB) finish, which gives a greenish hue to the reflected light and I used invisible thread. A little bit of wadding was sandwiched between the front and back to give it some body, and the whole lat was simply sewn together with a whip stitch. Two holly leaves cut from metallic card and flatback rhinestone berries finished the brooch off.

The sewing of the sequins took a while, but it was a labour of love. If you didn't have the time or inclination then I suppose a clear-drying fabric glue would also work, but I love the meditative quality of hand-sewing. I will be sporting my pudding brooch this year, and I might even make up a few more to hang around the house.Mrs. B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13913898039403718543noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812400871388338528.post-41278479682213630762015-11-04T20:28:00.000+00:002015-11-04T20:28:10.197+00:00WIP WednesdayIt was almost a year ago that I wrote a post for WIP Wednesday where I introduced my long-neglected red, white and blue blanket (RWBB). Well, I fell off that wagon in a pretty big way! But I'm pleased to say I've gotten back on and RWBB is back in progress. I haven't got a picture, but I've made a bit of progress filling in the gaps. I'm aiming for one section a day, but then I've said that before...
I've been slowly working on my Christmas crafts. I found this cross stitch kit that's been buried since 2011 according to the date of the Cross Stitcher magazine! I always forget just how much time it takes to do even a simple cross stitch motif, but the results are always pleasing.Mrs. B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13913898039403718543noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812400871388338528.post-88407694594008638162015-10-11T21:20:00.000+01:002015-10-11T21:20:30.247+01:00It's finished!Well, first of all hello after an almost 3-month break 👋. Many of my recent blog posts seem to start with an observation about how much time has passed since my last post, but it's true! The school holidays were always going to be slow from a crafting perspective - lots of time spent away from home camping, making day trips and visiting family. It was pretty hectic. It's been about 5 weeks since the kids started back at school and I'm only just feeling like things are settling down again.

But enough about all that. I have exciting news. The baby blanket, the one I started back in February, is finished 😁! That's right, finished.. done... completed. And even better, I was able to hand it over to the intended recipient on Saturday 👊.

I can't tell you how pleased I am to be able to say that. The whole finishing process seemed painfully slow and soooo boring at times, which is why I went long periods of time when I didn't even want to look at it, but I learned a valuable lesson about crochet blanket-making. The lazy crafter in me declared that I would NEVER make another blanket with lots of colour changes ever again! But I think that if I had darned in the ends periodically, after every five squares or after every row for example, it would have resulted in a much more pleasurable process.
I can't believe it's been so long. It seems like every time I sat down to write a post it was no longer Wednesday. Because it's been so long I'm a little bit embarrassed about how little progress I've made on the baby blanket (yes, it's still a WIP) but here goes.

I've edged the blanket with a single row of treble crochet in sandstone followed by a single row each of yellow, terracotta and turquoise in double crochet. I decided to keep it simple. Then I began the arduous task of weaving in all the ends and that's where the whole thing has come to a halt. If you look closely at the picture you can see that there are some 'clean' squares but there are still a lot of ends to weave in. I haven't been giving it much of my attention because I find it so dull, but now that I've outed myself maybe it will give me renewed impetus.

The other thing I've just started is a mandala for the #MandalasforMarinke project. For those of you who don't know, Marinke, a.k.a. Wink, was a crochet blogger (from A Creative Being) who died at the end of June. She had been living with depression and sadly took her life. I was really affected the day I heard as were hundreds of others. Kathryn, of the blog Crochet Concupiscence decided to set up #MandalasForMarinke, where she has invited crocheters across the globe to crochet one of Wink's mandalas (or any item that they like) and send them to her for a collaborative art project, partly as a way to honour Wink's memory and partly to help raise awareness about depression. I have chosen the mandala from Issue 7 of Simply Crochet Magazine. If you'd like to know more, please visit her blog.Mrs. B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13913898039403718543noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812400871388338528.post-83551645130378208142015-05-13T20:40:00.000+01:002015-05-13T20:40:58.116+01:00WIP WednesdayBaby Blanket
Well, it looks like a blanket! All the strips have been crocheted together and I've started putting a border around the edge.

I've gone for a simple treble crochet border.

I'm not quite sure yet whether to do multi-coloured rows (matching the blanket colours) or to go with a plain border. As it's a baby blanket I'm leaning towards multi-coloured. Any thoughts?

I'm dreading weaving in the ends. There are so many. Next blanket I make from scratch is going to be monochromatic!Mrs. B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13913898039403718543noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812400871388338528.post-72929304925114678062015-04-29T20:28:00.000+01:002015-04-29T20:28:01.639+01:00WIP WednesdayI'm writing this on a coach home from London. I love being a passenger on long journeys. Lots of time to crochet!

The baby blanket is taking shape. 8 of the 9 strips have been completed. I would have done all 9 but I was missing a couple of squares. Must have miscounted somewhere along the way. Anyway, I've started joining the strips together, but it looks like more yarn will be needed! So much for stash-busting.
Once you get out of the habit it's really hard to get back in. That's not to say I haven't been making anything, but I'm really enjoying cardmaking at the moment, which means only occasional forays into needlework.

Anyway on to the WIPs in question:

Red, white and blue crochet blanket

Very little progress to report here. I've completed all of the white-edged squares and have started filling in the gaps with blue. Still quite a few to go though.

Progress has been slow for a very good reason...

...I started a new blanket! I know, I know, but this one is special as it's to be a gift for my husband's cousin who just had a baby about a month ago. I've made really good progress considering how long the RWB blanket has been under construction.

The blanket will be a very generous 1 and a bit metres by 90cm, so hopefully baby won't outgrow it too soon. That's 10 x 9 rows of granny squares. I've crocheted all 90 and am now joining the squares together:

I hope a lovely time was had by all. Since making Christmas cards there's been very little in the way of crafty activities going on around here. I have made a little progress on my projects though.

I've attached more white-edged squares to the blanket. There are only 2 squares left to attach and then all the holes will need filling in with blue yarn: 15 whole squares, 12 half square triangles and 3 quarter square triangles.

The Advent Calendar is no longer a WIP, but I'm ashamed to admit that it didn't get finished until very recently! *looks sheepish* Maybe I'll write a separate post about it.

Not much, but it's progress! Four blocks have been edged in white, and two of those have been joined to the main blanket. Apologies for the train track in the photo. I was under strict instructions not to dismantle it!

I feel like I also need to mention this Advent calendar. I started it during Advent last year (that's so me) and am in danger of not finishing it in time for this year. It looks a bit odd because it's pinned in a funny way.
But not this week! I have waaaaaay too many projects on the go that have been lingering for far too long. I'm hoping that by making WIP Wednesday a regular feature on the blog that I'll actually make some progress.

My first WIP is my red, white and blue crochet blanket. I started this in 2012 amid the patriotic fervour of the royal wedding, the Queen's Jubilee and the Olympics in London, hence the colour choice. More than two years later it's still in progress. It spent most of that time at the bottom of a big bag of other half finished projects. But I would love to have this done before winter is out to put on my eldest's bed. I need to put a white border around the remaining squares and join them to the main blanket. Then fill in the holes with blue.

I think I'll leave it there for now. Blogger's playing up, I can't find the photos I'm looking for and it's time to get the kids! To see what other WIPs are out there head over to Pin Tangle for a nose.

I went around the circle three or four times in different shades of green, and once in brown to give the effect of twigs. To prevent too much uniformity in the greenery I slanted the arms of an open Cretan stitch and inadvertently discovered the similarities between Cretan and Feather stitch. I've since discovered that Cretan stitch is also known as Long-armed Feather Stitch, so it wasn't exactly a breakthrough discovery! It's a nice stitch to stitch, if you know what I mean, having a nice rhythm once you get going.
But alas, life and other crafty interests got in the way and it fell by the wayside. Thankfully, Sharon at Pin Tangle has made it easy to stitch along regardless of where you are in the list of stitches. I really do want to improve my embroidery repertoire and it's nice to have a visual record, so I've gone back to the beginning and will work my way through the list. Eventually!

The first two stitches are Fly stitch and Buttonhole stitch. My Buttonhole offering was inspired by Wallachian embroidery which resembles satin stitch, but is worked purely in Buttonhole stitch. Mine has quite a few gaps and is a bit uneven. I just didn't have the patience to do the technique justice!
